Hot100 Updates War Of Words Over Gas For Gove

The Darwin Pulse



A war of words continues to rage between Chief Minister Terry Mills and Opposition Leader Delia Lawrie over the gas for Gove project.


Yesterday Mr Mills revealed a letter written by the then Chief Minister Paul Henderson in July of 2012 that the Government could not guarantee to pacific Aluminium a 10 year gas supply to Gove to keep their refinery operating.


Ms Lawrie has responded saying Mr Mills deliberately left out other content from the letter including page 2 which specified that further gas reserves could be made available upon strict conditions.


Mr Mills held talks with key stakeholders of the Gas for Gove proposal yesterday, and a response is is expected at some stage today

A street light came down onto the intersection of Amy Johnson and McMillians Road as part of a gusty storm that swept through Darwin last night.


Police blocked off the affected area as Power and Water maintenance crews arrived to remove the street light.


During the storm wind gusts of up to 80km/hour were recorded a 17mm of rain was recorded between 7 and 8pm at Darwin airport.


The storm capped what has been a below average month of rainfall for the Territory.

The Northern Territory Government has offered Rio Tinto the gas they have requested, provided a replacement gas supply is made available to Power and Water.


However the opposition has said the trip is Perth is not necessary and if the Mr Mills does not make a deal quickly the refinery will close.


Yesterday the residents of Nhulunbuy held a rally, asking Mr Mills to find a viable solution to the problem as the fate of the town relies on the operation of the refinery.

2 people have had a lucky escape after a tree fell onto their campervan while staying at The Daly Waters Inn.


Watch Commander Garry Smith said one of the occupants, a 49 year old female, was able to get out the campervan while a 63 year old male remained trapped inside.


“Staff from the roadhouse used a chainsaw to cut away branches and was able to free the 63 year old male. He suffered possible broken ribs, minor heads injuries, and both were obviously in shock.”


Fortunately the van was attached to the couples Land Cruiser which prevented the van from being completely crushed.

The CLP have selected Rihanna Harker as their candidate for the by-election while the Labor party have selected Nicole Manison.


The first parliamentary sittings for the year resume on February 12 which means for the first week of sittings the seat of Wanguri will not have a representative.

A World War 2 Bomb was discovered at The Darwin Turf Club on Wednesday afternoon.


Crews were working on the resurfacing of the track when they discovered the object said to be the size of a football.


Police, firies, and the Army were called to the scene and confirmed the Bomb was not live before taking it away.


Due to the bombing in Darwin 1942 it is not the first time bombs have been found in the top end, with an unexploded one found on Rapid Creek Beach 12 months ago.

“His Manner Of Driving Brought Attention to himself after he was seen driving with both the right wheels up on the median strip before doing a U-turn and driving very slowly and weaving around in the lane”

There’s been a tragic end to the search for missing Victorian man, David Lansdown with police discovering what is believed to be the body of the missing man is his Mazda Ute in Central Australia yesterday.


Police discovered the Ute on a dirt track about 50km West of Alice Springs with police still yet to formally identify the body, but are treating the death as non suspicious.


Mr Lansdown had been travelling through Australia and was staying at the Desert Rose Inn in Alice Springs from December 20 before checking out on December 24.

A 29 year old male has died as a result of a single vehicle crash on Vanderlin Drive around 10:30 last night.


Watch Commander Chris Resisca said "A sedan was travelling towards Casuarina Square when it has left the road travelling sideways as it went up onto the median strip in the centre island and struck a light pole.


The vehicle was torn in half as a result of the impact and a 29 year old driver died at the scene.


Members from the major crash unit have attended the scene and will be investigating the incident".


The incident now brings the Territory road toll to 2 for 2013.
