HVDRA News: Bumper Field set for Slamfest at Hidden Valley

The inaugural Hidden Valley round of the national Slamfest Series has already broken records and it’s still over a week away.

10 Top Doorslammer teams have registered for the drag racing event, eclipsing the previous largest contingent seen in May 2011.

Hidden Valley Drag Racing Association, with support from the Territory Government, has been finalising touches for the big weekend.

“We are very pleased to be able to secure another national motorsport event for the Territory” said HVDRA President Jay Jukes.

“Drag racing is going from strength to strength in the NT and the calibre of the teams who have registered for this inaugural event shows the potential for Hidden Valley Drag Strip into the future.”

Reigning ANDRA Top Doorslammer champion, John Zappia will headline the field but he is going to have his work cut out for him with veteran racers including Maurice Fabietti, Peter Kapiris and Gary Phillips also making the trip north to Hidden Valley.

Coupled with Daniel Gregorini, Frank Mamone and Russell Pavey the seven strong interstate contingents will also have to overcome the home track advantage that the local racers have.

Matt Abel, Peter Coles and Scott MacLean will be flying the flag for the Territory.

Both Abel and MacLean have been able to run five second passes so have the potential to cause an upset.

While the official track record still stands at 5.909 seconds set by Zappia in May 2011, MacLean boasts the fastest pass of 5.886 seconds at 243mph.

HVDRA News: First Time Winners at Round 4 Track Champs

A hotly contested Round 4 of the Track Championship Series was seen at Hidden Valley Drag Strip on Saturday night where for the first time this season Dieter Herrmann was knocked off the first place podium.

In a small Outlaw field Herrmann met Grant Radcliffe in the finals. Only new to the bracket, Radcliffe showed fine form beating Herrmann off the line with a winning 0.038 second reaction time. It was enough to maintain the lead throughout the run, finishing with an 8.54 second pass on an 8.50 second dialin.

Super Sedan was also drama setting with Des Groves only just able to make the finals after suffering a flat tyre. Some hurried repairs saw him accept the tree but the win went to Wayne Harris with a 10.505 second pass on a 10.22 dialin.

A myriad of false starts saw three finals all decided by red lights. Colin Sainsbury took out the automatic win against Heath Costello in Modified Bike while Brandt McGlade defeated Darren Savage in Street Bike.

Street Car also had a red light win with Greg Reed victorious over Ellen Musk. It is enough to allow Reed to jump 10 points ahead in the series point score but with 3 rounds still in the season Musk is still in with a chance take out her rookie year.

Alvaro Decastro took out his first time win in Super Street with a 12.727 on a 12.60 dialin. His better reaction dispatched rival Troy McGregor who could not recover.

HVDRA News: Track Champs Points Chase Heats Up

The second half of the Hidden Valley Drag Strip Track Championship Series is set to unleash this Saturday night and the points chase is starting to hot up.

The Super Sedan of Grant Rowe has a respectable 40 point lead over Steve Schruers and to date has been the only Super Sedan competitor to make it to two finals berths throughout the year. With four events still to go Rowe will have to be on his game to maintain his momentum.

Super Street and the Super Toyworld Junior Dragster brackets are a similar story with Shaun Boyer holding a 30 point lead over David Voysey in Super Street and new comer Darcy Muller 40 points clear of equal second place holders Travis Hagen and reigning champion, Jodie Coles.

The Street Bike and Modified Bike brackets look like they will again be hotly contested with only 10 points separating the leaders. Modified Bike sees Geoff Hawkins ahead of Ray Joy-Warde while Street Bike has Mark Tattingham on top of Darren Savage.

It’s the Street car bracket that is going to be anyones game and while Bob Czerniawski and Ellen Musk have shown consistency at the Off Street events they are flooded with a bevy of other competitors in the Track Championships. Only 10 points separate the top 6 on the ladder after the unusual situation of having unique round winners at every event this year. While Greg Reed, Tony List and Ellen Musk all share equal first their position is
